MXA’S AMA RULE OF THE WEEK: DIFFERENT YELLOW FLAG FOR DIFFERENT PEOPLE

Unlike with most amateur and local races, AMA Pro racing’s yellow flag is merely a courtesy. It carries with it no burden to slow down or hold your position. Quite the opposite — and many racers speed up when the see a yellow flag, assuming that their competition will “proceed with extreme caution.” Since there is no penalty for racing through a yellow flag, there is little incentive to slow down.

Local tracks, at least the ones that are interested in rider safety, ban passing within the area of the yellow flag (and it isn’t uncommon for tracks to ban jumping doubles if the yellow flag is waving at that location). The penalty is often as severe as deducting one lap from the offending rider. Rider safety is important—and a downed rider is very vulnerable.
